What is vegan wine?

🌱 Just like all "other wines", vegan wine it is a grape-based product, therefore plant-based by definition.

😨 However (not everyone knows that ...) during the vinification of conventional wines, ingredients of animal origin such as casein, albumin, isinglass, bone glue, gelatine, ox blood can be used, just to name some of the most common fining agents widely and legally used in wine production.

😍 Unlike conventional wines, vegan wines DO NOT use animal ingredients, either in the vineyard and in the winery, replacing them with natural clay,  algae and vegetable proteins from potatoes and peas, thus guaranteeing a higher quality, humane, and sustainable final product. Isn't that fantastic?

How to distinguish a vegan wine?

✔️ A vegan wine is distinguished by the "V" it proudly bears on its label (front or back).

🙁 Unlike organic wine production, there is still no ministerial regulation, in other words, a law that dictates precise rules to the producer to protect the final consumer.

Vegan wine producers can opt for self-certification (that means guaranteeing under their own responsibility that they do not use animal ingredients or derivatives) or request certification from third- parties such as VeganOK, Icea, Bioagricert, Qualità vegana, CCPB, and the Vegan Society, to name just a few of the most well-known national and European organizations.

So, what’s the difference between self-certification and official certification? To cut the story short, official certification sets apart truly committed wineries from those that are just “playing their own tune.” Certification is a mark of seriousness and transparency, it shows that a winery’s practices have been independently verified, not just self-declared.

🍾 Companies that opt for a "do-it-yourself " vegan production, often overlook essential aspects, focusing solely on the wine and forgetting that the bottle and packaging must also ensure full consistency with the same values. From the inks used to print the label, to the glue used to attach it to the bottle, from the capsule protecting the cork, to the box that will deliver the wine to the end customers, it is essential that no animal ingredients or derivatives are used. This is why the vegan certification is very important!
